When I first started to work at Valley Occupational Medical Center, I did not know too well the different types of drug screenings available. One of the drug screenings that I learned perhaps the first week on the job was the hair sample drug screening. According to studies, hair specimen drug test can detect drug usage for up to three months. A hair is taken from the root of the scalp measuring approximately 1.5 inches. Every 0.5 inch represents one month which three months equals 1.5 inches. One may ask, what about an individual that has short hair or perhaps shave their head? The hair sample can be taken from any other section of the head. If hair from the head cannot be obtained, we can get hair from other body parts. If hair from another body part is used, this type of hair specimen can date back to one year. One important thing to remember is that body and head hair cannot be mixed together.
Hair specimen drug testing tends to be far more accurate in detecting drug usage about 4 to 8 times more than a urine sample. There are five drug classes that hair testing screens for: Cocaine, Marijuana, Opiates, Amphetamine, and Phencyclidine.
If you have any questions regarding a hair sample drug screening, do not hesitate to give, Valley Occupational Medical Center, a call!
