First Aid for Tar or Plastic Burns

tar burn

As soon as you get a burn by hot tar or hot plastic and these objects are stuck to the skin– you must have precaution as to how to handle the situation. The first step to take is to immediately run cold water over the tar or plastic to cool down the contents and stop the burning.

Do not attempt to peel the tar or plastic after it has cooled because doing so may peel the skin stuck to the tar or plastic. To remove tar or plastic, loosen it with mineral oil or an ointment such as Vaseline. Tar will likely peel off after a few days when skill cells below the tar flake off.

After the tar or plastic is removed, wash the burned skin. If you still have trouble removing the tar or plastic, you should seek medical attention.
